Tech pack
The product specification document that holds the technical drawing, measurements, bill of materials, construction and labelling instructions for a style.
Marker
The cutting layout that shows how every pattern piece for the sizes in a work order is placed on the fabric width to minimise waste.
Ply
One layer of fabric in a lay; ply count is the number of layers spread before cutting.
Shade band
A range of acceptable colour variation for a fabric, used to group rolls so that pieces in one garment match.
Block
A basic fitted pattern for a garment type and size from which styled patterns are developed.
Grading
The process of increasing or decreasing a base size pattern to create the full size range using grade rules.
Sealed sample
The client-approved pre-production sample, tagged and archived, that bulk production is measured against.
Bar tack
A dense reinforcing stitch used at stress points such as pocket corners and belt loops.
Lasting
The shoemaking step in which the upper is stretched and shaped over the last before the sole is attached.
Goodyear welt
A footwear construction in which a strip of leather is stitched to the upper and insole and the sole is stitched to the welt, allowing resoling.
